I feel like my personal paradise would have bottomless mimosas, an abundance of shirtless men who bring me said mimosas, and lots and lots of cats to play with. Well, at this cat coffee shop in Ferndale, Michigan, you can least get one of those things! You can find the Catfé Lounge on Livernois Avenue, where dozens of sweet, adorable, fluffy balls of cuteness are waiting for you to come play.
Founded in 2015 by the Ferndale Cat Shelter, it was one of the first cat cafés to open in Michigan after the phenomenon exploded in Japan. There are over 58 in Tokyo alone. However, while the idea of having cats in a café is mostly a novelty overseas where the wellbeing of the cats is a point of contention, here in the US, most cat cafés tend to focus on adoptions in partnership with shelters. With stricter health codes, American cat cafés tend to lean more towards the “cat” part than the “café” part and can’t sell much in the way of food and beverage, which are a bit more BYOB around these parts. But it’s OK! That leaves more hands free for petting the pile of cats that snuggle up under your arms… and the ability to maybe even adopt one! There are about 3.4 million homeless cats in the US, and places like the Catfé Lounge are helping them find loving families. This 501c3 non-profit organization is always looking for volunteers, so you can even get your “upstanding citizen” points while snuggling these precious little fur babies.
If you are in the Metro Detroit area anytime soon, you should definitely swing by and get your cuddle on!
