3 Quick Thoughts
1. Will the Wings ever win a game this year?
The Red Wings lost again, this time getting humiliated by the Montreal Canadians 7-3. The Wings are still winless for the year with a record of 0-5-2 and have been outscored 15-5 over their past two games. What makes matters worse is that five of the Wings’ next six games are against projected playoff teams, and outside of the home game against a Hurricanes team that has been better than expected this season, there just do not seem to be many winnable games on the docket for the Wings. Now, in the NHL, anything can happen, but this miserable start to the season only looks like it will continue for the Wings – at least until they can figure out how to fix their mistakes.
2. The lineup changes fail to spark the team
After getting walloped by Boston this weekend 8-2 and coming into the day with the worst goal difference in the NHL at -12, head coach Jeff Blashill decided to switch up the lines and the defensive pairings. He moved Andreas Athanasiou to the Bertuzzi and Nielsen line, and added Martin Firk to the Abdelkader and Ehn line while replacing the injured Danny Dekeyser with Luke Witkowski. He hoped to find the right combination to unlock this team’s potential, but that did not occur. What ended up happening was that the Wings continued to play the way they have all season: too many turnovers, no finishing around the net, and poor special teams play. Blashill is firmly on the hot seat, and it’s starting to look as though he has no answers to fix the issues plaguing this team.
3. When will Zadina get the call up?
With the Red Wings putting in another anemic performance offensively, the question that has been on fans’ minds all year is when will we get to see uber goal scoring prospect Filip Zadina in Detroit? Well, the fans are going to have to be patient for awhile longer. Even with his two-goal performance for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL, the Wings’ front office have not given any official time table as to when Zadina may be called up. It seems they are going to let him develop in the minors for the time being, but if he keeps putting on clinics like he did this weekend, we hopefully will get to see him up with the team sooner rather than later.
