Winter is quickly approaching, and that means it’ll soon be time for the holidays! The Detroit Opera House is ready to get you in the mood with “The Nutcracker,” one of the world’s most popular ballets and a Christmas classic for many families. There will only be three performances on Nov. 24-25, and many tickets have already been sold, so hurry to the Michigan Opera Theatre website if you’d like to grab a few seats for yourself. The show is suitable for all ages, and daytime performances will also include family activities before the ballet begins.

The ballet tells the story of a family celebrating Christmas. Drosselmeyer, the godfather of the family’s daughter, Clara, arrives and gifts the children with beautiful toys he made himself, including a particularly special nutcracker for Clara. That night, the nutcracker comes to life and transports Clara to the magical Land of Sweets.

The show has several famous songs you may recognize, including “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “Dance of the Reed Flutes.” It remains one of Tchaikovsky's most well-known works.
